What did kids do before there were cell phones and Facebook? This thought came to me as an email I received about how easy kids have it now. It made me think if life was harder when I was a kid or was it just simpler? If you are over 45, you will relate!

At the ripe old age of 52 and all 3 of my children grown up, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today and how much technology has changed their lives, their expectations and how they interact. It is easy and almost comical to point out how much easier a kid's life is in so many ways compared to what I had growing up, but how much is really good and how much makes life harder for them in the long run? I do not have an answer, but would love to share some memories..

As social networking and social media tools expands, so do the platforms and options available for people, especially our kids to communicate. This brings me to Chattoulette, which is the brain child of a 17 year old Russian teenager. It allows you to link up with total strangers via video. Many consider Chatroulette as the hottest face-to-face or one on one video chat application on the internet that is a webcam-linking social network. It's like Facebook, but you link up via video feed. Have you ever heard of it? You log on with a webcam and then basically spin the wheel. You end up talking to total strangers from all over the world and it is important to know that everything that you say or do can be recorded by whomever you are chatting with.

The question today is not "it's 10pm do you know where your child is?" as it was in the past. We know where they are. They are up in their room on the computer, roaming the internet and hanging out on social networks. The question is which is worse?

Social networking is fast becoming woven into the fabric of our society and will continue to grow and dominate how we all communicate in the future. As parents, we all need to understand what that means and how to both prepare and protect our children when using social networking media like Facebook, Twitter, Texting and the over 25,000 other sites that market themselves as social networks.

The real key is "Social Awareness" and that requires an investment in time by each of us as parents to understand what social networking is, what it is not, which networks our kids are using and and making them aware of some simple rules that will protect them in the future. Do not depend on the school system, the internet or your kids themselves to know how to respond to intimidation, bullies, predators or other internet social threats, you need to be proactive to help protect them, rather than reactive and end up consoling or defending them.

When many of us think of personal protection the first things that come to mind is a gun or maybe pepper spray. Have you ever thought of "Wasp Spray" to keep in the car, home or business to protect yourself against a potential attacker. Sounds a bit crazy, but it is true. Not wanting to own or bring a gun to work at a church she went to and asked her local police department about using pepper spray to protect herself in case of an robbery. They told her she should buy a can of wasp spray instead.
