When many of us think of personal protection the first things that come to mind is a gun or maybe pepper spray. Have you ever thought of “Wasp Spray” to keep in the car, home or business to protect yourself against a potential attacker. Sounds a bit crazy, but it is true.
We have all read about some of the brazen robberies at churches this past year where the thief walks into the church office Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning and steals the collection receipts from the past weekends services. Received a recent email about a woman who was living near and working at a church office in a high crime area and she was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday morning to rob them when they were counting up the collections prior to depositing them into the bank.
Not wanting to own or bring a gun to work at a church she went to and asked her local police department about using pepper spray to protect herself in case of an robbery. They told her she should buy a can of wasp spray instead.
Why Wasp Spray
The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate. With pepper spray you have to get too close to your attacker to be effective and that gives them a better opportunity to overpower you. In either case aim for the eyes. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.
She now keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn’t attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for protection.
It is not something a woman is going to carry around in their purse, but I know that I can hit a wasp nest or a person from 20 feet and be ready to run like hell.
Self Defense Expert’s Agree
On the heels of a break in and beating that left an elderly woman in Toledo dead, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.
Val Glinka teaches self-defense to students at Sylvania Southview High School .. For decades, he’s suggested putting a can of wasp and hornet spray near your door or bed. “This is better than anything I can teach them. He considers it inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, “spray the culprit in the eyes”.
It’s a tip he’s given to students for decades. It’s also one he wants everyone to hear. If you’re looking for protection, Glinka says look to the spray. “That’s going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out.” Maybe even save a life.
There is Always A Legal Issue To Consider
Using wasp spray to protect yourself does not mean that you will not be sued by your attacker and an over zealous lawyer. I would rather make sure my daughter or wife was safe though and worry about defending why they sprayed an attacker in the eyes to fend them off in court as opposed to visiting them in the hospital or worse.
Adding wasp spray to my list when I go to Home Depot this weekend!
